Jason Momoa Spills His Life Secrets!

[00:00:00] Top of the morning to everybody out there. I'm Irish. I have to do it. It's part of my shtick. But hi Jason. Lovely to meet you. Oh to me. How's your day been so far. Pretty good. Yeah. Busy morning shows in limbo. Yeah. Very good. Just saw the movie this morning. Absolutely loved it this morning. Yeah. We're here in town. We got to go to the Warner Brothers house in order to sit in a little private theater and see it personally. So. Let's see. Yeah. I would rank it pretty high. But I was I was a little apprehensive going into it as I think a lot of people are because everyone's like Aquaman. Like how do we do that and everything. But now it's fantastic. I laughed a bunch I had a great time. Okay good. He did a wonderful job. He looked like you were having an absolute bonus. And so I'll start off just asking like a fairly generic question was like How did you come about this role. Like how. How did it come to be.

[00:00:55] Zack Snyder just called me at his office and I went in and did an audition for Batman. Oh but I did a. Not an audition for me I played it rather different. And then he called me in and had an idea and invited me in to. Tell me that. He wanted me to play Aquaman. Yeah.

[00:01:15] And then it's been five years since that day happened really five years either September 20 30 2013. I don't know how to keep it a secret for about two years. Yeah.

[00:01:27] And then we did Batman Superman which I trained for a very long time.

[00:01:31] Yeah. And we worked one day on those eight show business.

[00:01:38] And then you know training again for Justice League and Charlotte here. And so I did that. Now we're. Here. Franklin shot down in Australia.

[00:01:47] Yeah. That's crazy. Yeah. I mean it just looked like you were having so much fun playing the role and everything. You know I think Zack hired me for the reason of

[00:01:55] Why would you make a movie about Aquaman. Yeah it's pretty lame. Generally people would think and he wanted to make something special and then James on top of that wanted to make it even more special and build that whole world and do something that hasn't been done. Yeah. And take you know that stereotype and

[00:02:11] If we can make kids be stoked to watch Aquaman so yeah that's kind of a hard sell for a lot of people. Yeah. Whenever you ask kids who their favorite superhero is very few of them say Aquaman but

[00:02:22] I mean after seeing it I'm a huge on my fan.

[00:02:25] He's he has. I mean there's a lot of great things I love about him. And I think there's a lot of things that just are in us everyday life. You know he's just a rich. I want him to be a blue or group blue collar worker and you know Dad's the lighthouse keeper. I figured he worked on ships and worked on oil rigs and you know he had lost people and save people. Yeah. Powers worked in sometimes but sometimes he you know that his greatest powers you know being human being his empathy.

[00:02:54] And you know discovering that he has that talent that he can help the world and or his ability to drink which his dad still better.

[00:03:04] Yeah most of our dads are better at drinking. So how much you like yourself did you get to put in the role. This is definitely the most of me in any role that I played it feels encouraged from day one from Zack and from James you know even down to the wardrobe Zach's like how you know

[00:03:23] What is you know where am I going to put Marco Polo. Yeah but I mean the suit is just like all right. So yeah he's like I want what you got going and there's like just a slash on that play slash stuff. Yeah.

[00:03:39] But the military wear on and you're good to go. Recently I went around Europe and America and did a tour talking about. Like my life and where I came from and the things I do and why I'm here right now. So I thought it'd be interesting to like delve into a little bit of that because you've come from like way back and done stuff like Baywatch and a lot of people knew you from Game of Thrones and things like that Stargate even. Yes Stargate arguably more of a bit yeah. So I'd like to see that sort of rise and to see you now Star as like the main role in a superhero movie that must be a crazy shift.

[00:04:12] It's a trip. What do you think about it. Yeah. You want to know the origins of why. The road Aquaman. Kind of yeah.

[00:04:20] All right.

[00:04:22] I was going to go to school and college in Colorado and I left to go get to know my father better and my father my whole family. Big Waterman. Yeah. And they were surfing big waves and they were turning into big waves and so I went to 19 years old. Let's go work in the family surf shop and I want to tell into big waves. And I did and also the TV show came in the day that I was supposed to go back to school in Colorado was the day that he got hired. For Baywatch. I was a biology major. You want anything to do with acting. I down go meet chicks and my cousins and then a month of auditions in the Dallas school art school. You're the lead role. That's crazy. Which was twenty two twenty two episodes for nine or ten months of the year. And then we did two seasons came back to L.A. At 21 she didn't know anything about acting and started getting into classes and didn't want to live by a telephone waiting persona calling me and couldn't find an agent. Yeah but has traveled the world and. To France and Tibet and Italy and I just was a big rock climber so I just traveled the world climbing and living out of my bag and. Experiencing the world and spending the rest of the money so that I could. See life if it all ended. Then I did everything I wanted to do. Then know the money ran out. The debt of an Airstream like an old caravan. And then the casting director from Baywatch to thing got me a job on this Lifetime series with Virginia Madsen and that took me down to Australia. Did that show. And then there was a good competition to get out or there was an audition trying to play Tarzan.

[00:06:00] Oh wow. And I was like oh I rock climbing. I look like a Neanderthal before going on long hair.

[00:06:06] Maybe I'll play Tarzan and my dear friend Travis animal. Now you may know he's like in Vikings and things like Yeah he got it and I was living with him I came back

[00:06:16] And he got the role and I was living with him. And then Stargate Atlantis. We do that for four years. It's like going to college or can make Hoover do that for nine months. Forty two episodes. I know how to. Shoot right do all that stuff. You basically spend four years of the life doing that and then I met my wife in the last season. And having a family and that show and in. A. Pint glass the face and the. Eyeball popped out kind of thing and it took about a year off. Had a young baby and my wife was pregnant again and my first audition back was

[00:06:51] Game of Thrones. I did one little comedy thing and then Game of Thrones and then that took us over to Belfast. Shot that and then Conan wanted to do want to do a movie. CONAN That script was horrible but I knew that I had Game of Thrones. Yeah. And we did it. And there's an opportunity to jump from like you know 10 on the call sheet to number one if it did well. Yeah yeah it did its thing.

[00:07:22] And that hurt me and the movie was The and that hurt me.

[00:07:27] And then I just had to take it in my own hands and I wrote my own movie with a friend of mine and I directed my first film and then I got a lot of people to see me in a different light and that got me onto the Red Road at Sundance. Yeah did that for two seasons and then Zach called Mandan was doing the red road and did a bunch of other stuff that just to put food on the table how to wait until all this stuff came out and then frontier came fall over that role. At that and started directing and directed the third season of what we're doing now and now I'm on a show called scene which is apples new. Yeah.

[00:08:03] And on my second movie I'm a director which will be right after I finish C in March. And you know mental does well and I can green light a lot of the products I've been writing for a while yeah saving often biding my time.

[00:08:19] People that catch on.

[00:08:20] So the thing the thing I'm most interested in with people is just like like that kind of thing. Hearing their stories and where they came from because everyone's going through their hardships at some point in their life and doing what I do through YouTube. I meet a lot of like teenagers and lot of kids everyday who are trying to find themselves and figure out what they want to do with their life. So I always like asking if you had any advice for anybody who's going through those types of hard times because something always comes in the end.

[00:08:46] Yeah I'm sure is. And I think about that a lot. I'm not sure if I have an answer but there's always definitive moments. Where you can track back then later in life or you go left and go right but there was definitely those forks in those crossroads. Where. You know. If you make the right choices but you can also make a lot more crossroads for yourself too.

[00:09:04] You can get out there and take a couple more lefts and rights and find your path. You know

[00:09:11] I love it. Great answer. Well this is great. Thanks Jeff. Thank.
